Dental Veneers
A dental veneer is an extremely thin, tooth-colored shell that is designed to cover the teeth in order to provide them an improved color, luster and shape. Porcelain and composite materials are the two primary materials used for making veneers. In recent years, the technology to make dental veneers has advanced greatly. There are several very high quality brands of veneers available today, mostly using advanced porcelain materials.

Dr. Guyot makes use of veneers whenever it is the most suitable solution available for improving a patient’s smile. Dr. Guyot will do a diagnostic wax-up to determine if the patient is the right candidate for veneers. A practice run in wax also gives the patient a fair idea of how the veneers will look once they are cemented, and the patient may even contribute their own opinion about how the veneers should be shaped. Dr. Guyot says that good quality veneers are highly technique-sensitive and require superior craftsmanship to produce desired results.

Difference between Porcelain and Composite Veneers

Porcelain is a superior quality ceramic that is made out of extremely refined forms of clay. Due to its very high level of purity, it attains translucence, which makes it a perfect material that adopts the natural color of teeth. Composite resin, on the other hand, is made with a combination of certain tooth-colored materials and chemicals that bond together to produce the resin.

Veneers made out of porcelain are superior to veneers made of composite material in several ways. The strength of porcelain is much higher in comparison to composite materials. The translucent nature of porcelain makes it an excellent material from an aesthetics point of view. Furthermore, porcelain is highly color stable and stain resistant in comparison to composite resin.

Dr. Guyot believes that porcelain veneers are much more technique-sensitive as far as their craftsmanship is concerned. Porcelain veneers are also somewhat more expensive compared to composite veneers.
